Underestimated fires’ impact on global warming

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

“Fires are obviously one of the major responses to climate change, but fires are not only a response — they feed back to warming, which feeds more fires,” Thomas Swetnam of University of Arizona said. Russian forests contain more than 50% of the carbon stores in the Northern Hemisphere. Some burnings in Siberia exceeded the size of the US State of Virginia in recent years.

Fire can change the climate quickly with large emissions of CO2 and other pollutants such as black carbon

These warnings come from an international team of fire specialists from six nations. One of them, Thomas Swetnam of the University of Arizona in Tucson said “We’ll be seeing more and longer droughts, and with more hot and dry years, we’ll be seeing still more and larger fires.” California’s fire in 2008 wiped out 380,310 acres. In 2009, California is dealing with their 3rd year of serious drought.

Wild fires aggravated by global warming further speed up climate change

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Scientists at a geosciences conference in Vienna predict fires will increase and could spread to previously fire-free parts of the world as the climate changes, and in turn contribute to global warming by producing greenhouse gases. In 2007, more than 200 wild fires erupted in Southeastern Europe. Canadian fires are expected to double with a longer fire season by the end of century.

The effects of climate change exacerbated the ferocity of 2009 forest fires in Australia

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Eucalyptus forest and farms in south-eastern Australia are getting warmer, drier and more prone to fire due to global warming. Tens of thousands of wildfires blaze every season, with climate change exacerbating their intensity.

Fire’s effect on ecosystems and climate change was previously underestimated

A new report shows that all fires combined release an amount of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere equal to 50 percent of that coming from the combustion of fossil fuels. “It’s very clear that fire is a primary catalyst of global climate change,” said Swetnam, director of UA’s Laboratory of Tree-Ring Research. Huge areas of boreal forests of Siberia, Canada and northern Europe burn each year.
