The Pacific region especially vulnerable to climate change conditions

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization warned in a recent report that the Pacific region is particularly vulnerable to climate change, warning of coastal communities already being inundated by rising seas, the loss of wetlands and coral bleaching, as well as an increase in disease and heat-related mortality resulting from climate change.

Millions predicted to become climate refugees as global warming increases

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Millions of people are predicted to become climate refugees as global warming increases, and there are currently no laws to even recognize them, much less to guarantee their rights and provide their aid. The UN’s 1951 Refugee Convention does not identify the victims of natural disasters and climate conditions to be official refugees. However, after half a century of environmentally-unfriendly industrial development, the global ecosystem has been altered to an extent that climate change will threaten the safety and stability of countless millions, and now their official recognition and systematic relocation is no longer a choice, but a must.

At least 50 million people to be environmental refugees by 2010

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

Climate change is now creating more refugees than war and political unrest combined, and scholars have calculated that 50 million people worldwide will be displaced by 2010 by rising sea levels, desertification, evaporating aquifers, weather-induced flooding, and other serious environmental changes. However, despite the massive number of environmental refugees, they are currently unable to receive the much needed aid that would help them to recover and relocate themselves, since their state as environmental refugees has yet to be officially recognized in world conventions.
