Only 43% of cereal produced is free for human consumption

Only an estimated 43% of cereal produced is available for human consumption, as a result of harvest and post-harvest distribution losses and use of cereal for animal feed.  (UNEP report ‘Environmental Food Crisis’) (P.19)  “…feeding cereals to animals instead of using the cereals directly as human food represents the annual calorie need for more than 3.5 billion people.” (P.27)

684,000 child deaths due to insufficient zinc and vitamin A intake

It is estimated that 684,000 child deaths worldwide could be prevented by increasing access to vitamin A and zinc. Vitamin A and zinc supplementation can have a synergistic impact on growth and development, as well as survival. Countries with low per capita incomes can make significant progress if appropriate policies are matched by political will.

146 million children under five years old underweight

More than 70 percent of the world’s 146 million underweight children under age five years live in just 10 countries, with more than 50 per cent located in South Asia alone. These 146 million constitute one quarter of all developing countries’ children.

2009 hits record high with over 1.02 billion people in the world hungry

World hunger projected to reach a historic high this year (2009) with 1.02 billion people going hungry every day. According to Josette Sheeran, Executive Director of the UN World Food Programme “The rapid march of urgent hunger continues to unleash an enormous humanitarian crisis. The world must pull together to ensure emergency needs are met as long term solutions are advanced”.
