2 more glaciers gone from Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park has lost two more of its namesake moving icefields to climate change, which is shrinking the rivers of ice until they grind to a halt, the U.S. Geological Survey said Wednesday.

Warmer temperatures have reduced the number of named glaciers in the northwestern Montana park to 25, said Dan Fagre, an ecologist with the agency.

He warned the rest of the glaciers may be gone by the end of the decade. (more…)

Iceberg the size of Luxembourg breaks off Antarctica

An iceberg the size of Luxembourg knocked loose from the Antarctic continent earlier this month could disrupt the ocean currents driving weather patterns around the globe, researchers said.

Glaciers worldwide melting fast – set to cause serious water shortages

Results of climate change will cause millions of people in Asia and South America whose supplies come from melting snow and glaciers to experience water shortages.

The area of Peru covered by glaciers has decreased by 25% in last 30 years.

The Himalaya-Hindu Kush region which has more ice than anywhere other than polar regions, is melting fast.
